A prolonged guessing game that had delayed the commencement of all-out election warfare in Dublin Central ended last night with Bertie Ahern's decision to bow out of Irish politics.
The man deemed to be the most cunning of them all, the man embroiled in relentless Mahon Tribunal controversy, the man with the tenacious appetite for canvassing and the man believed to have led the country from boom to bust exited the political landscape without pomp or ceremony.
He leaves with his Northern Ireland peace process legacy duly noted and recorded by the historians.
