TAOISEACH Brian Cowen's inability to reflect the public mood has resulted in a significant breakdown in discipline within the Fianna Fail ranks.
The old reliable formula of adopting a party line and sticking to it -- through whatever hail of thundering criticisms and avalanche of demands that follow -- is being unceremoniously dumped.
In the aftermath of the botched cabinet reshuffle, ministers and backbenchers are breaking free of the party leash and opting to speak more openly on the contentious issue of the day -- regardless of the Taoiseach's stance.
