AIB is plotting, B of I laughing, Government is pussyfooting

Once again our leaders keel over before the all-powerful financiers who fleece us even though we own them, writes Shane Ross

It was like old times for the bankers last Wednesday. Ireland's big bank bosses were back in Government Buildings pow-wowing with top cabinet ministers. Resonances of the dark night of the bank guarantee were recalled.

No fewer than four macho ministers decided to eyeball the visitors from AIB, Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank. Government spinners had flagged this as the meeting to give the bankers their marching orders on mortgages.

Not a banker blinked.
