It's starting to look as if Bertie Ahern wasn't kidding when he said he was the last real socialist in Ireland. It was the former Fianna Fail leader who doled out the goodies during his tenure as Taoiseach, and the actual socialists in the Irish Labour Party who are now taking them away, one by one.
Who'd have thought that Joan Burton, pin-up girl of the caring Left, would spend the week contorting herself into ever greater knots trying to justify taking money off people who, only a few short months ago, she was insisting had already suffered enough at the hands of the recession?
As the sounds of barrels being scraped in search of excuses grew ever louder, it was left to independent TD Stephen Donnelly, speaking on TV3's Tonight With Vincent Browne, to express the incredulity at how the high-faluting talk from the opposition had so quickly turned into the same mealy-mouthed rhetoric of the previous government.
