A young man who did not 'commit' anything

Suicide is a 'forever' solution to what would have been seen in hindsight as a temporary problem, says Gavin Duffy

Many people would be taken aback by the extracts from a suicide letter I have just read. It was written by a young man just before he ended his own life four years ago this weekend.

But the decision not to publish details from such a note, despite the permission of the deceased's father, was not taken lightly by the Sunday Independent.

The father wanted the letter published in full. We have decided against that course, mindful of the expert advice that publishing such letters in their entirety could be dangerous, especially to those who already have a suicidal ideation.
