TRAGIC ironies come along in pairs sometimes. Michael Noonan announced from across the Border yesterday that he's going to hike up VAT by 2pc next year -- a move that's expected to be a boost for the Northern Ireland economy as shoppers will head north for lower prices.
The Finance Minister's confirmation of a taxation measure from Armagh, where ministers were meeting their northern counterparts, came three weeks before the Budget.
His enforced announcement came after details of the budget preparations were discussed in the German parliament.
