A year in sport – our highs and woes

A Bray boxer, a hurler from Kilkenny and a golfer from Down made 2012 a sporting year to remember, but there were lots of stinkers too, writes John Meagher

From the highs of a female boxer from Bray and the enduring gifts of a veteran hurler from Kilkenny to the lows of those abject performances in the Euros and being on the receiving end of a 60-0 defeat to the all-conquering Kiwis, our sporting year has lurched from the glorious to the downright awful.

It was a year too, where the world's most celebrated cyclist lost his halo and where racing fans bade farewell to two of the finest horses the sport has ever seen.

And 2012 will be remembered as the year when a young golfer from Holywood, Co Down, topped the rankings, but found himself in hot water when it came to the thorny issue of nationality.
