IT’S tough to say. If Jolie’s previous two marriage ceremonies are anything to go by, it doesn’t bode well for traditionalists looking for another ‘Disney Princess’ like the Duchess of Cambridge in her big, white, Alexander McQueen gown.
Angelina sealed her union with ‘Hackers’ co-star Johnny Lee Miller in black rubber pants and a white blouse, and with ‘Pushing Tin’ leading man, Billy Bob Thornton, in faded jeans and a lilac skinny t-shirt.
As well as ultra-casual separates, human blood featured prominently in her bridal-wear with Miller’s first name scrawled on the back of her top in her blood at her first wedding, and a vial of sang-de-Billy-Bob hanging around her neck in the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas.
In fairness, she has toned down the crazy since meeting Brad on the set of ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ (mating habit, anyone?). From around that point onwards she matured her act right up with reams of humanitarian projects, and a new look that straddled the conservative-sexy divide. Virtually the last we saw of the pre-Pitt Jolie was her ‘other woman’ leather halter Versace dress at the movie’s LA premiere in mid-2005.
Gone were tanks, tees and jeans – her new attitude as a mother to her growing family and need to rise above the cheating rumours that dogged her new relationship - which saw the end of the Pitt- Aniston marriage - heralded the entrance of classic tailoring and an almost exclusive neutral palette of white, greys, beige and black.
If Angelina’s red carpet appearances of late are to take the lead in predicting the style and designer of her wedding dress, there are clear trends at play. Jolie prefers a slim line silhouette. The 2012 Oscars black velvet Versace with that enormous split skirt was a step outside her comfort zone, literally.
Generally she chooses draped gowns in soft, light fabrics and favours high-cut strapless and long sleeved styles, over plunging necklines. She makes the odd return to leather and a sexy neckline, but it’s always done in the best possible taste.
The predominant designer of choice in the past seven years has been Versace. The majority of Jolie’s stand-out looks at movie premieres, film festival, and on the awards season carousel have been by Donatella’s hand.
There is a particularly interesting potential partnership with the Italian fashion house’s couture line, Atelier Versace, which this year produced both Jolie’s red-and-white Golden Globes column gown and the now infamous black ‘leg’ dress from the Academy Awards.
On historical data alone, if she were to go with another go-to designer we could be looking at Max Azria, Elie Saab, Michael Kors, Armani, Emanuel Ungaro and Jenny Packham, who have all benefitted from the ‘Brangelina’ factor in recent years.
It is doubtful that she would option her former endorsement partner St. John given that they ditched her after three years as the face of the brad citing her fame overshadowing the brand as the issue.
Fantasy sports betting website, ‘WagerMinds’, top picks are Versace 5:2, followed by Max Azria 3:1, Armani 7:1, and Elie Saab 8:1. Outside chances go to traditional bridal designers Carolina Herrera, Oscar De La Renta, Vera Wang and Kate Middleton’s favourites Packham and McQueen.
With no date, no location and just the promise of a ring and a press release all we can do is speculate as to which designer will be blessed with Angelina’s endorsement for what will undoubtedly be the gown of her life.
Will Ange even wear white? With a gaggle of kids and a trail of divorce in her wake, it’s unlikely. The timing of Bridal Fashion Week New York this past weekend was quirky to say the least, where top-name bridal couturiers showed their vision for Spring 2013. There was a predominance of lace, ethereal chiffon and big bows. None of these really sound like our gal, now do they?
But like a flash of serendipity, bridezilla dresser to the stars, Vera Wang, sent a collection steeped in deep blood reds down the fashion aisle - no doubt perpetuating her new direction designed to weather the storm of the Kim Kardashian nuptials backlash. Perhaps Jolie will option a winter wedding to appropriate a darker colour choice.
Dress silhouette, designer and colour aside, the ‘Brangelina’ brand needs this wedding. Ridicule, rumour and revenge gushes from media outlets concerning their lifestyle, ‘the leg’ and common opinion on what these two ‘did’ to America’s sweetheart, Jennifer Aniston.
Angelina worked hard at cleaning up her image after the divorces and breaking the public’s heart by allegedly ‘stealing’ Brad from Jen. A fairy-tale wedding could be what she thinks she needs to truly win the masses and her critics over. An incredible dress, memorable for all the right reasons, just might do the job and erase the public’s memory.
