A feast of music, art and more at Picnic

It's a great escape with the best acts and talks and food in a big field. You can't beat the Picnic, writes Barry Egan

Sometimes you just need to get out of town and feel the grass under your feet. And so it proved for 55,000 people at Electric Picnic in the pastoral idyll of Stradbally, Co Laois yesterday.

Although they came for Madness, Elbow, The Strypes and Duran Duran and the great mix of art, culture and food, these revellers were also following an old ritual of getting away from the evil of the city - escaping to the countryside to seek a harmony of their own making.

Electric Picnic is as much a state of mind as it is a music festival. It awakens something primal in us that is beyond the marketing.
