Young Einstein wins international prize for his web project
Thursday September 22 2005
Patrick Collison (17), a fifth year student at Castletroy College, Co Limerick, was awarded joint second prize in the EU contest for young scientists in Moscow yesterday.
His entry was chosen from 78 projects and 35 countries which took part in the competition. Three first, second and third prizes were awarded in recognition of the diversity of disciplines represented.
Patrick received ?3,000, on top of ?3,000 he received in January when he was named Esat BT Young Scientist of the Year, for Croma, a new language which helps speed up the design of web applications.
The Dromineer, Co Tipperary student was thrilled with his win and while he thinks a future in commuting/technology probably lies ahead, he is keeping his options "as broad as possible. I have another couple of years to think about it".
Patrick, who has nine computers and pays ?100 a month for a satellite broadband link via Germany, came second in the Esat BT Young Scientist when he was 15, with a project on artificial intelligence, called "Emulating Human Response".
