Would-be robber makes a meal of it

Saturday January 21 2006

A WOULD-be robber phoned police to complain that his local Chinese takeaway owner threatened him with a knife.

Belfast Crown Court heard that a masked Andrew Lundy (19) and a juvenile went to his local Chinese takeaway on the Newtownards Road armed with a knife and shouting "money, money".

The owner grabbed a knife and challenged the pair, who ran off empty-handed, the court heard. Lundy later phoned the police and said he had been threatened with a knife.

But police uncovered his role in the bungled raid, which Lundy claimed was "a joke".

Lundy said he wanted to "scare the owner", claiming he was "short-changed the night before".

He was freed on 18 months' probation.
