Wife of Dubliners star Ronnie Drew dies

THE wife of Dubliners' singer Ronnie Drew has died in Dublin. Deirdre Drew (nee McCartan) passed away yesterday at St Vincent's Private Hospital in Dublin.
Her husband, her son actor Phelim Drew and his wife Sue, her daughter Cliodhna and husband David Dunne and her brother Padraig were at her bedside.
She is also survived by grandchildren Ruaidhri, Aoife, Vivian and Milo as well as her brother Padraig.
A friend said: "She died peacefully after a short illness with her family around her."
Deirdre, who was in her 60s, had been married to the famous Dubliners singer for over 40 years. They lived in Greystones.
The legendary singer was diagnosed with throat cancer last year and underwent nearly six months of treatment at St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin.
Ronnie, who has successfully battled cancer, had been due to return to the stage today at the National Concert Hall for the Legends of Irish Folk concert. Phil Coulter will take his place.
Mrs Drew's body will be removed to the Church of the Holy Rosary in Greystones next Monday for funeral Mass at 11am.
