Wedding day drama as couple and guests take plunge

By Ralph Riegel

Wednesday April 13 2011

A BRIDE'S dream day almost turned into a nightmare after a freak accident while taking wedding photos on a wooden footbridge resulted in the entire party being dumped into a muddy stream.

However, the wedding of Michael Hickey and Yvonne O'Leary was rescued last Saturday by the kindness of shop owners in Midleton, Co Cork.

Yesterday, the bride's sister, Jackie, said her entire family was left speechless by the kindness of boutique and menswear shop owners, beauticians, hairdressers and a hotel.

"I just cannot put into words how grateful we are," she said.

The drama began when the bridal party was taking photos in the Midleton Heritage Centre in East Cork.

As the 10-strong party stood on the small footbridge near the Jameson Heritage Centre, disaster struck.

"All we heard was a 'crack'. Then almost everyone ended up in the water," Jackie said.

Yvonne was in shock as her champagne-coloured dress was left soaking wet.

However, after a few desperate phone calls, Ria Burgoyne of 'Say I Do' wedding boutique and the staff at Coakley's Menswear came to the rescue and kitted out the wedding party in new clothes.
