Two held in dissident probe

Two men have been arrested by gardai investigating dissident republican activity.

Police at Cobh, Cork, last night recovered a firearm at a wooded area.

Two men aged 32 and 45 were detained nearby during the operation at Leamlara, Watergrasshill.

Horses raced down busy road

Travellers videoed racing ponies through traffic on a busy main road in Ireland are likely to be prosecuted, police sources have said.Internet footage of the controversial sulky race on lightweight traps has sparked outrage among road safety chiefs, animal welfare groups and community representatives.Two men can be seen weaving through traffic at high speed on the Cork to Mallow road and narrowly avoiding oncoming cars in the six-minute clip.

O Cuiv to stay with Fianna Fail

The Galway West TD, who clashed with leader Micheal Martin over his refusal to support a Yes vote, has vowed not to campaign against the compact.The 61-year-old confirmed his decision at Leinster House and said he wants to remain in Fianna Fail to reform the party.
