Thousands of teachers march on department

By Shane Hickey

Wednesday November 25 2009

MORE than 5,000 teachers amassed outside the Department of Education as part of the national strike yesterday.

Across the country, thousands of teachers staged protests as primary and secondary schools shut down.

The Irish National Teachers Organisation said the action outside the department was aimed at securing "meaningful talks on an equitable plan for economic recovery".

The union said 1,500 teachers joined a protest march in Dublin during the morning, while some 700 protested in Naas, Co Kildare; 400 in Tullamore, Co Offaly; 500 in Athlone, Co Westmeath, and 500 in Limerick.

Meanwhile, the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland said the vast majority of its 18,000 members were on the pickets around the country.

The Teachers Union of Ireland said between 50pc and 65pc of its members had been out on strike.

In University College Dublin, there were pickets at all of the gates leading into the Belfield campus. A spokesperson said arrangements had been made to reschedule some classes in the run-up to the exam period.
