Thousands of revellers should expect gridlock

By Stephen O'Farrell

Saturday August 30 2008

Cars and campers stuck in traffic for the campsite at the Electric Picnic, which opened yesterday. Frank McGrathIRELAND is on the move this weekend as thousands turn out for outdoor events across the country -- including Electric Picnic, the Tour of Ireland Cycle Race, the Irish Motocross Grand Prix and the All-Ireland football semis.

And Met Eireann is forecasting a largely dry weekend with scattered showers in some areas.

The Automobile Association said the Electric Picnic in Stradbally, Co Laois, would be the biggest culprit for traffic congestion over the weekend.

The Cork Road from Money Cross to Able's Corner is closed to non-festival traffic until Monday, while delays are expected all weekend on the M7 and N80, and in the entire area.

The Tour of Ireland Cycle Race's stage four and five run from Limerick city through Dingle to Cork city.

Motocross on in Fairyhouse, Co Meath, later today and tomorrow, could cause problems through Ratoath with over 25,000 patrons expected.

And all streets leading to Croker are expected to be jammed. A park-and-ride service to the semi-final will leave from GAA clubs on the periphery of Dublin.
