The word on prices in the property market

Thursday January 15 2009

BRIAN COWEN, Taoiseach: "I believe we are coming to a point this year where that will bottom out."

RONAN LYONS, economist, Daft.ie: "There may well be a bottoming out of the market in some areas. It's not groundless what he (Mr Cowen) is saying. The property adjustment was needed."

EDWARD CAREY, president of IAVI: "I'm surprised, pleasantly surprised, to hear this. maybe Mr Cowen has a number of stimulus packages up his sleeve."

AUSTIN HUGHES, chief economist, KBC: "If this is a once-off comment to get a bounce it will probably fail. But if he is hinting at an overall plan, this could well be part of a bottoming out process in the market."

JIM POWER, chief economist, Friends First: "This is a psychological ploy to get people thinking more positive. In my view, it will not work when one looks at the fundamentals."
