The retirement riches of our five triple pensioners

  • Richie Ryan

Pension: €115,049

Was first elected as a Fine Gael TD in July 1959.

In 1973 Mr Ryan (pictured right) was appointed Finance Minister. His policy decisions earned him the nickname "Richie Ruin". He was elected as an MEP in 1973 and sat in parliament from 1977 to 1986.

  • Gerard Collins

Pension: €128,044

Became a Fianna Fail TD for Limerick West in 1967. He served as Posts and Telegraphs Minister (1970--73), Justice Minister (1977--81 and 1987--89) and Foreign Affairs Minister (1982 and 1989--1992). He also served as an MEP between 1994 and 2004.

  • Noel Davern

Pension: €89,531

Became a Fianna Fail TD for Tipperary South in 1969. He was appointed Education Minister in 1991. He also held the post of Junior Agriculture Minister between 1997 and 2002. He also served as an MEP between 1979 and 1984.

  • Liam Hyland

Pension: €83,149

First entered public life as a Senator in 1977. He went on to become a Junior Agriculture Minister between 1992 and 1993. In 1994, the ex-Fianna Fail TD was elected as an MEP and served until 2004.

  • Tom O'Donnell

Pension: €109,619

Entered public life as a Fine Gael TD for Limerick East in 1961. He attained ministerial office as Gaeltacht Minister between 1973-1977. In 1979 he was elected as an MEP.

McAreavey suspect accuses police

Avinash Treebhoowoon, 30, confessed to police about his involvement in strangling Michaela McAreavey, but now insists he was forced to sign the statement.Treebhoowoon and co-accused Sandip Moneea, 42, deny murdering the 27-year-old teacher on her honeymoon at the Legends Hotel.
