Healthy adults are to be offered the swine flu vaccine in the workplace from the middle of next month, writes Eilish O'Regan.

The vaccine may be delivered by the HSE to workplaces that have occupational health schemes.

Staff who could not avail of the vaccine at their workplace would be offered it at HSE-run clinics, said HSE head of population health Pat Doorley.

Meanwhile, the spread of swine flu fell again last week, affecting under 1,000 people.

There were no new deaths from the virus and the toll has now remained at 22 for several weeks as the pandemic has waned, with a small rise in early January.

Three people with the virus were admitted to intensive care but the numbers hospitalised continue to fall.

An estimated 15pc of people in Ireland have contracted swine flu since the outbreak last spring.

Dr Doorley said that over 800,000 people, or 18pc of the population, had so far been vaccinated. It will continue to be offered to schoolchildren.
