Stunning line-up for Handel's Messiah heralds start of Christmas festivities

HANDEL'S Messiah is coming to the Grand Canal Theatre in Dublin with a line-up of Cara O'Sullivan, Tara Erraught, Ross Scanlon and John Molloy, accompanied by the Galway Baroque Singers and the Irish Philharmonic Orchestra. The conductor is David Brophy. Handel's Messiah was first performed in Fishamble Street in Dublin on April 13, 1742, and is an essential part of the Christmas festivities in Dublin. It runs from Sunday, December 4, to Sunday, December 11, at 8pm. Tickets from €25 from www.ticketmaster.ie and Ticketmaster agents nationwide.

Images reveal world of ancient China

'CHINA Through the Lens of John Thomson' -- a new exhibition at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin -- gives a glimpse into the enchanting world of ancient China, with images taken by legendary Scottish photographer and explorer John Thomson. The images tell the story of how people lived during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911).

The exhibition, on loan from the Wellcome Library, London, runs until February 2011 and admission is free. Alongside the stunning images there are items from the library's own collection including silk shoes for bound feet, a Han Chinese woman's robe embroidered with designs symbolising marital harmony and fertility and children's hats and shoes in the shape of fierce animals.

Two new shows are on the menu

AMY de Bhrun returns to the Mayfield Eatery, Terenure Road North, Dublin, with two new shows, which have been described as a "winning mix of dinner and drama".

She'll be performing Life -- A One Woman Show every Wednesday from November 23 until Christmas.

Amy will be doing The Money Man -- A One Woman Show every Thursday and Friday from November 24. Both shows feature contemporary themes of emigration and unemployment, with a twist of comedy and compassion.

Jedward to join Westlife for farewell

JEDWARD have been signed up to join Westlife on their farewell Dublin concerts in Croke Park on June 22 and 23 next. Special guests also will be The Wanted. Tickets for June 22, priced from €59.50 and limited to eight per transaction, went on sale last Friday at Ticketmaster outlets nationwide.

Benefit auction for artist Alexandra

'ART For Alexandra', a benefit in aid of Alexandra Trotsenko -- the artist who lost part of her hand in a horrific attack in Dublin -- will take place at Adams auction rooms, Main Street, Blackrock, Co Dublin, on Sunday, November 27, from 9am to midday. Artists including Jane O'Malley, Trevor Geoghegan, Robert Ballagh, Maria Levinge, John Dinan and RTE presenter Joe Duffy, who raised this issue on his Liveline programme, have pledged contributions to the auction.
