Students launch 'Generation Yes' in Lisbon battle
Saturday April 25 2009
Social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter have become a battleground in the second Lisbon Treaty referendum -- after a group campaigning for a 'Yes' vote launched themselves online.
Made up mainly of third-level students, Generation Yes believe a lack of information in the run-up to the last Lisbon referendum was the main reason for the 'No' vote victory.
The group says it is frustrated with a political system that failed to inform young people and "allowed anti-Lisbon groups to spread lies and use scare-tactics".
Generation Yes director Andrew Byrne said that the campaign wanted to "reject the myth that young people are apathetic and don't care about Ireland's future".
The group is using social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to promote their message.
Its Facebook page went live on Tuesday and already claims 700 supporters. Campaign groups are also organising in Galway, Cork, Maynooth and Limerick.
