Stressed out Leaving Cert students get helping 'feet'

STRESSED Leaving Cert students will be provided with a helping hand during this year's results celebrations.

A campaign called 'Feet on the Street' will have volunteers from the Samaritans patrol Temple Bar to offer help to those who feel isolated or stressed by the festivities.

A new free 24-hour text support service will also be available to students who are experiencing panic, anxiety and despair at less than first-rate results.

It will provide students with information on how to access support services on a range of issues.

The automated service, which is fully confidential, will allow distraught students to access help on mental health issues, sexual health, suicide and relationships by texting 'Headsup' to 50424.

Over 52,000 students are expected to receive the results of their Leaving Cert in schools around the country on Wednesday.

According to the Samaritans the large volume of people celebrating will mean that it will be one of the biggest flashpoints of the year.

"It's an extremely stressful time for students and there will be a lot of worry out there even though people will be celebrating," said director of the Samaritans Suzanne Costello.

"The night itself is one of the biggest flashpoints of the year for us. For many students it's their first night out. And with a lot of drink taken they can feel very isolated and this can be dangerous.

"For many, it will be their first encounter with severe stress and pressure. Unlike adults who know that the pressure will lessen after a few days, students may feel like it's the end of the world.

"That's why having someone to talk to is extremely important."

The new campaign will be an addition to the annual helpline run by the National Parents Council, which provides a confidential service to students who are upset by their results.

This year the service - which is sponsored by the Irish Independent and Eircom - will have professional members of the Institute of Guidance Councillors on standby from 9am.

Just under a dozen volunteers from the Dublin Branch of the Samaritans will patrol the Temple Bar area from 9pm to midnight.

Students who need extra emotional support will be able to talk confidentially to trained volunteers at the ready.

The organisation will also be handing out their cards for anyone who may wish to contact the helpline later in the night.
