Spider-Man row settled

Friday February 17 2012

THE former director of the Broadway adaptation of 'Spiderman' is to be paid royalty fees as part of a settlement ending a bitter legal dispute with the hit show's producers.

The rock musical, which has lyrics and music by U2's Bono and the Edge, was plagued by delays before it finally had its opening night last June.

Julie Taymor, pictured with Bono, worked on the original 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' musical, before being fired from the production last March. It was later revamped.

But she filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against the 'Spider-Man' producers, saying they made "unauthorised and unlawful use" of her written works.

Producers Michael Cohl and Jeremiah J Harris filed a counter-suit against Ms Taymor last month, accusing her of jeopardising the production of the show by "developing a dark, disjointed and hallucinogenic musical."

Under the settlement agreement, Taymor will receive full royalty fees for her services as a director through the show's duration, as well as some fees toward her work as a collaborator.

After a turbulent start, the show has been steadily packing in audiences on Broadway, making a record-setting $2.9m (€2.21m) from Christmas to New Year's Day. It cost more than $70m (€53.3m) to bring to the stage.
