Specs appeal the eyes have it

Nerdy, geek but chic. Specs are a must-have accessory this season, the bigger, the better -- and yesterday, Tara Goodbody was the height of fashion as the 19-year-old from Schull in west Cork walked away with the Spectacle Wearer of the Year award.

Tara (pictured), who is studying Anthropology and Environmental Science at Oxford-Brookes University, proved that old adage about brains and beauty.

The teenager with the luminous eyes and impossibly long lashes is in the frame to land a coveted contract with the Storm Model Agency in London.

Tara has a one-in-10 chance of landing the contact after she was selected in Dundrum Town Centre, Dublin, as the Irish entrant in the international Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition.

Organised by Specsavers Opticians, the event is hosted in London in November by Kelly Brook and Gok Wan, the male TV stylist who has triggered a copycat fetish for geeky black specs.

Student Sarah McDermott from Newbridge, Co Kildare was the runner-up.

"I got my first pair of glasses when I was 12 and I was excited because it was a new look. I don't need them for studying, I wear them for long distance and I do think glasses make you look intelligent," said Tara.
