Security breach at embassy

A MAN was being questioned by gardai last night after he breached security at the residence of the American ambassador.

Security staff detained a man, believed to be a tourist, at around 6pm after he got on to the wall surrounding the grounds of Ambassador Thomas C Foley's residence in the Phoenix Park in Dublin. It is understood the incident is not being treated as a terrorist incident or a serious threat.

Youth charged with murder

A 17-year-old Brazilian youth was yesterday charged with the murder of a compatriot who died after being stabbed in the head.

Claudio Fernandes (33) of Duleek, Co Meath died on July 29. Yesterday the youth, who cannot be named because of his age, was remanded in custody for a month at Dunleer District Court. He has already been charged with assault causing harm and with possession of knives in relation to the same date.

Courses to cut suicide dropped

Suicide prevention courses run by special resource offices in the Health Service Executive (HSE) are being cancelled because of cutbacks, it was claimed yesterday.

The suicide resource officers are involved in organising courses on suicide prevention for teachers,gardai and other groups -- but the ban on booking venues in order to save money means they have now been shelved. Fine Gael TD, Dan Neville -- who is President of the Irish Association of Suicidology -- yesterday said the cuts were untenable given our rising suicide levels.

Protester talked down from roof

A man who staged an eight-hour rooftop protest has been arrested after he was talked down from the roof by a garda negotiator yesterday.

The man who climbed onto the roof of the CY Hall in Newbridge, Co Kildare, at 6am shouted at passersby and threatened to throw himself off the roof. The area was cordoned off and a Garda negotiator was called in to deal with the situation.

Cyclist dies after fall from bike

A MAN cycling through the Phoenix Park died in a fall from his bike. The body of the man, in his 30s, was found shortly after midnight yesterday.

Gardai sealed off the area between St Mary's Hospital and the Chapelizod Gate. A most-mortem later revealed that the man died from head injury. His bicycle was found close by.
