Sculptor honoured for helping to shape the arts

PRESIDENT Mary McAleese yesterday led the tributes to a renowned German-born sculptor who was honoured at a special ceremony for her contribution to arts in Ireland.
Imogen Stuart was presented with the 'McAuley Medal' at Mary Immaculate College in Limerick in honour of her life's work in her chosen field.
Speaking to the assembled guests, Mrs McAleese said that Ms Stuart brought "a freshness and passion" to her art.
"She radiates a personal joy in life and in creation itself. She is one of those people you love to meet. You come away feeling energised," Mrs McAleese added.
Thanking the President and all at the Limerick college for awarding her with the honour, Ms Stuart said she was "deeply moved" by the award and tributes.
She fondly recalled that she received one of her first big commissions from the college shortly after coming to live in Ireland in 1951.
"I was invited to carve three life-style statues," she said. "My relationship with the college has lasted more than 50 years."
