Record breaker: monster wave in top surf spot

By Treacy Hogan

Wednesday December 14 2011

THE highest wave ever recorded in Irish waters formed off the coast of Donegal yesterday.

The monster wave measuring a massive 20.4 metres (68ft) was recorded at 2pm yesterday by a weather buoy 44 nautical miles off Donegal, according to Met Eireann.

The weather service said this was the highest maximum wave ever recorded in Irish waters.

The Donegal coastline is famous for its monster waves among the surfing fraternity, and attracts surfers from around the world.

But the Irish Coast Guard issued a warning yesterday for members of the public not go out sightseeing the big waves because of the dangers involved.

Coast Guard manager Declan Geoghegan warned the public not to go out on exposed coasts, cliffs, piers, harbour walls, beaches, promenades or any other coastal areas during the gales.

Mr Geoghegan added: "Do not attempt to cross at fast-running river or flood-water fords as they may be stronger and deeper than you think.

"Flooded urban areas may contain many hazards, not least of which include submerged open manholes and downed power lines.

"The combination of tides, forecasted gale warnings for the next day or so, high sea conditions and swollen rivers may result in very dangerous conditions," he said.
