Thousands rang in the new year in College Green

TOURISM Minister Leo Varadkar has promised an even bigger and glitzier celebration to welcome 2013 after thousands attended Dublin's inaugural New Year festival.

Around 10,000 revellers enjoyed a concert in College Green featuring performances from The Coronas, Paul Brady, Damien Dempsey, Bressie and Riverdance; and the Dublin GAA football team received a standing ovation when they brought the Sam Maguire on stage.

Yesterday, Mr Varadkar said the massive event was the foundation for something bigger. "I think for next year it's something we're going to build on, we're going to have a bigger party," he said.

In the days leading up to December 31, a number of free events were held to provide entertainment for all ages, including an outdoor ice skating rink in Wolfe Tone Square and a Big Brunch in Meeting House Square. It is estimated that almost 30,000 enjoyed the three-day 'NYE' celebrations.

NYE Dublin promoter Paul Davis said: "This was the first year of NYE Dublin; it was a great success and we hope it will grow into a major annual showcase for the city and a boost to local business."
