Pianist says prize was key to global success
A JET-SETTING young Ukrainian pianist has revealed how winning a prestigious Irish competition has helped open doors for him onto the world stage.
A relieved Alexej Gorlatch (21) yesterday touched down in Dublin ahead of his recital at the National Concert Hall this Wednesday at 8pm.
There had been fears that the volcanic ash chaos would scupper his plans.
The young musician revealed he was contemplating taking the boat over as he was so determined to play the venue, where he won the well-regarded Dublin International Piano Competition last May.
"Since the competition, I have played quite a lot of concerts across the world from New York to Korea to Japan," he said.
Some of his upcoming recitals include a return to Carnegie Hall in New York; the Wigmore Hall in London; performances with the Berliner Philharmonie and a tour of Japan.
Despite being a relative 'late-starter' after taking up piano at the age of seven, the pianist won many major accolades during his teenage years.
He said many of the young stars, particularly if their parents were musicians, were taking up their instruments from the age of three.
"My parents don't have anything to do with music ,so I'm lucky I have some free time," he quipped.
The student at the University of Music and Theatre in Hannover, Germany, said the reaction to his performances can vary, ranging from sedate clapping to stamping feet, depending on the age group of the audience.
