Pensioner (89) dies in house blaze

An 89-year-old retired farmer died in a house fire on the Erris Peninsula near Belmullet, Co Mayo, yesterday. He was named locally later as Michael McAndrew from Gortmelia, Inver.

The alarm was raised at around 10am by a neighbouring farmer who saw the window blinds on the victim's house were blackened by smoke. The victim, who lived alone, was an uncle of well-known local country and western singer Michael S Togher.

Prime suspect held over stabbing

Gardai investigating the fatal stabbing of Jason Ryan in Wexford town earlier this week yesterday arrested the prime suspect outside a Dublin prison.

The suspect was taken from Wheatfield jail in west Dublin and taken to Wexford garda station, where he was questioned throughout the day about the stabbing. He was detained there under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which meant he could be held without charge for up to 24 hours.

Gardai in appeal for missing teen

GARDAI have appealed for help in tracing a teenage boy who has been missing from his home for a fortnight.

Trevor Hegarty (16) vanished from his home in Mallow, Co Cork, on January 13. He is described as being of stout build and standing 5' 9" in height, with short blonde hair. When last seen he wore a grey sports top, a black tracksuit and white trainers. Gardai have urged anyone with information to contact Mallow station at 022 31450, their local gardai or the confidential line, 1800 666111.

Man quizzed over cannabis tent

A man was questioned by gardai yesterday after a cannabis growhouse was discovered in a house at Rochfortbridge, Co Westmeath.

Gardai found a cultivation tent at the rear of the house and discovered the cannabis plants.

Man charged with murder

A modern mobile command centre, which will be the focal point at all major emergencies in the north Munster region, has been unveiled. The vehicle is built on the chassis of a Volvo truck and includes a meeting room and communications area along with satellite and 3G communications systems.

The 'Incident Command Unit' will be based at Shannon fire station in Clare and will provide support at any major fire incident or emergency.
