Pedal power raises €250,000 for hospital

Saturday September 03 2011

Nearly 1,000 cyclists raised an estimated €250,000 for Temple Street Hospital yesterday by cycling to the Electric Picnic.

Rugby player Malcom O'Kelly and comedian Fred Cooke were among the riders who took part in the Vodafone 2Wheels Tour De Picnic, one of the biggest charity cycles to any music festival, which began at Tallaght Stadium at 10am.

Helping them on their way was RTE TV comedian Karl Spain, who acted as MC for the ride, and sent them on their way from Dublin with a light-hearted pep-talk.

Three hours and 80km later, the cyclists had arrived in Stradbally, having raised vital funds for the children's hospital.

Vodafone Ireland strategy director Paul Ryan said: "The Vodafone Ireland Foundation has been a long-standing supporter of the great work at Temple Street Children's University Hospital."

Speaking on behalf of POD, Lindsey Holmes said: "We thank all the cyclists that are taking part and wish them an enjoyable festival after their epic ride."
