PDs to have new boss by mid-April

THE PDs will have a leader in place by April 16 following the meeting of the party's national executive last night.
Party senators Fiona O'Malley -- whose father Dessie O'Malley founded the party in 1985 after falling out with Fianna Fail -- and Galway East-based Ciaran Cannon will now battle it out in the leadership contest.
Motorcyclist is killed in crash
A motorcyclist was killed in a crash in Co Waterford yesterday when his bike hit a car.
The 22-year-old was pronounced dead at Waterford Regional Hospital after the crash at Ballymacague, near Dungarvan, at 12.50pm. Nobody else was injured.
Body of lecturer found in canal
THERE was shock yesterday when the body of a popular academic at the National University of Ireland Maynooth (NUIM) was found in the Royal Canal near his home.
The body of Professor Tom Kelly (51), head of the Department of Philosophy, was discovered at 10.30am. He had attended a book launch in the college the previous night, and the canal would have been on his route home. NUIM president John Hughes extended sympathy to his wife Maureen, and mother May.
Stars come out for Ronnie
SOME of the biggest names in Irish music are to stage a special tribute to legendary folk musician Ronnie Drew on tonight's Late Late Show.
U2, Shane MacGowan, Sinead O'Connor, Andrea Corr and Kila will join with Ronnie's former group, the Dubliners, to perform the speciallyn composed 'Ballad of Ronnie Drew' on the show. The 73-year-old performer is currently battling cancer.
Hand grenade found in house
A World War II hand grenade was made safe by Defence Force ordnance experts in Cork yesterday.
The grenade, discovered during renovations at Cork harbour, is believed to be eastern European and 60 years old.
Colleges in link-up talks
Dublin City University and Dundalk Institute of Technology are involved in high-level discussions which could see DKIT students becoming DCU graduates.
The two colleges are considering a linkage agreement, but not a merger which would give Dundalk IT a foot in the university sector, allowing DKIT degree courses to be accredited by DCU and its students recognised as DCU students.
