Paedophile flees town following attack on house

Thursday October 04 2007

Convicted paedophile Oliver O'Grady has fled Dundalk and does not intend to return, a district court Judge was told yesterday.

It is believed the former priest, who was convicted in California in 1993 of abusing two brothers and sentenced to 14 years in jail, had been living in the border town for a number of months before his rented home was the subject of a burglary and criminal damage.

The incident took place in August, a short time after his whereabouts became public knowledge and was reported in the local press.

A local man, Padraig Owens (32), is before the court charged with burglary and two charges of causing criminal damage.

All offences are said to have taken place at the premises on Linenhall Street.

When the case was called yesterday, Inspector Leo McGinn told Judge Flann Brennan that "in light of what transpired the injured party has fled the town and does not intend to return."

His solicitor Conor MacGuil told the court that Owens had been drinking after "falling off the wagon" and that had led to what happened.

The judge adjourned the case until the October 24 and, in the meantime, the Probations Services are to prepare a report on Owens and whether or not he is suitable for community service.

As a condition of bail he told Owens to remain sober and not to get into any trouble.
