Over 10,000 locals object to sewage treatment plant plan

Saturday December 03 2011

MORE than 10,000 people living in north Dublin have objected to plans to build a sewage treatment plant in their area.

Thousands of submissions were delivered to Fingal County Council yesterday protesting at plans to build a regional plant to serve homes in Dublin and parts of counties Meath and Kildare.

The council is in charge of a project to build a plant on behalf of the four Dublin local authorities and has earmarked nine possible sites in Swords, Skerries, Lusk, Rush, Ballyboughal, Loughshinny, and Kinsealy.

A decision on the site will be made next year.

But objectors claim that the area is not suitable for a massive plant because it would impact on wildlife in the area.

Chairman of Reclaim Fingal Brian Hosford said the group was committed to bringing the project to an end.

"We have mobilised public opinion on this issue and the communities are determined to stand together in a Fingal-wide campaign to defeat this proposal," he said.

"The level of engagement with us on a range of issues relating to this project has been overwhelming.

"We have delivered submissions and letters from the local community with more than 3,500 from Rush alone, 2,000 from Skerries and 1,800 from Lusk."

He added that the group was seeking a meeting with the Fingal county manager to discuss its concerns and its proposal that a series of smaller plants be built instead.
