New prison block for gangsters
Tuesday November 24 2009
A NEW prison block for gangland and serious crime offenders has allowed the authorities to segregate them from subversive inmates at the top security jail in Portlaoise, writes Tom Brady.
The block, which can hold 200 prisoners, was officially opened yesterday by Justice Minister Dermot Ahern. He said it was part of an investment programme in extra spaces being rolled out over the next year.
The block provides 60 double cells and 75 single cells with in-cell sanitation plus a three single-cell area for vulnerable prisoners, increasing the overall capacity of the jail to 300.
It also includes a large education unit and a library.
