New archbishop promises to work closely with society

THE new Church of Ireland Archbishop of Dublin has pledged to work at the heart of society.

Speaking at his enthronement service in Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin yesterday, Archbishop Michael Jackson (pictured) said one of the principal public roles of religion was to hold dialogue with those who made decisions affecting all segments of society.

"It is vital that everyone take the authority that is hers or his as a person and exercise it," he said.

Archbishop Jackson (54), a native of Lurgan, Co Armagh, was Bishop of Clogher before his election last February to Dublin in succession to retired Archbishop John Neill.

Meanwhile, Catholic Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin has revealed church collections for parish development in the Dublin archdiocese came to €8m at the end of June 2010, a drop of 6pc on the previous year.

In a letter to 200 parishes for the annual share collection, Dr Martin appealed yesterday to 1.1 million Catholics to give money to the church, ahead of next year's International Eucharistic Congress, which will be held in Dublin.

Dr Martin said the "vibrant" generosity of Dublin Catholics was "all the more striking at a time of very serious financial uncertainty, falling incomes and rising unemployment".
