Nestle recalls products after glass found in jars

NESTLE has recalled some of its instant coffee products after they were deemed a danger to consumers.

Coffee drinkers were warned yesterday that some Nescafe instant coffee jars could contain pieces of glass.

Nestle Ireland is recalling 100g jars of Nescafe Alta Rica, Alta Rica Decaff, Cap Colombie, Suraya and Espresso after a small number of injuries in other countries involving pieces of glass.

However, the company said there had been "no complaints and no injuries in Ireland to date". It said consumers who bought any of these brands should dispose of the jar and its contents and contact a helpline at 00800 6378 5385 with details of the batch code and date.

The company would give a full refund but customers should not take the jar back to the shop where it was bought, it said.

A spokesperson for Nestle Ireland said the coffee was being sold in a new type of jar and there had been a packaging defect causing glass breakage. They were taking a cautious approach to ensure customer safety.

Meanwhile, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland said some organic sesame seed products had been found to have salmonella, which could cause food poisoning and should not be eaten.

The problem was identified during a survey of ready-to-eat nuts and dried seeds in Ireland after a case involving salmonella in sesame seeds last year.

The affected products are Organic Sesame Seeds and Organic Four Seed Mix in 250g and 500g packs, supplied by Independent Irish Health Foods.

Supplied to health stores, the products originated in Bolivia and have 'best before' dates of between 11/3/2011 and 7/5/2011.

Superquinn also withdrew a batch of Forest Feast Nuts and Sesame Seeds from China packed by Kestrel Foods, after a surveyed sample was also found to contain salmonella.
