Musician electrocuted in freak railway accident
A YOUNG Irish bodhran player, killed in a tragic accident in Siberia while touring with a dance show, lived for his music, his family said yesterday.
Martin Kerrane (26) from the Rath Cairn in the Co Meath Gaeltacht was only one week into an international tour of the Rhythm of the Dance Show when he was electrocuted in a train station in the Omsk region in the early hours of Friday, October 5.
The freak accident happened when the popular musician stepped back to take a photograph of the other dancers and musicians on the platform.
He reached out to steady himself on an electrical cable, not realising it was live and was killed instantly. Yesterday, his uncle Padraig MacDonnacha said he had been "all excited" about heading off to Europe with the show. "He lived music," he said.
Mr Kerrane, who was a carpenter by trade, performed a solo in the show and also played while one of the troupe, Damien McKiernan, danced.
Martin is survived by his parents Micheal and Brid, brothers, James and Billy, and sisters, Caroline and Fiona.
Martin will be laid out at his family home today and will be buried after a Funeral Mass in Seipeal Naomh Padraig, Rath Cairn, tomorrow.
