Murray 'overwhelmed' by response to show

Wednesday January 25 2012

BROADCASTER Colm Murray, right, said he was "overwhelmed" by people contacting him after an emotional TV documentary on his battle with motor neurone disease (MND).

Some 587,000 viewers watched Monday night's programme, in which the 58-year-old vowed not to let the disease ruin his life. The Westmeath man said yesterday he hoped the documentary "played some small part" in raising awareness of MND in Ireland.

The popular sports broadcaster was diagnosed with the condition on March 30, 2010, and has since been taking part in a number of international trials which hope to find a cure for the debilitating illness.

Professor Orla Hardiman of Trinity College and Beaumount Hospital, an international authority on MND, praised the RTE star for his courage in facing his condition.

"Colm could easily have laid down to the disease and become a victim but he instead became a champion.

"He agreed to the documentary in order to take the disease on, to recognise the limitations that it causes, and to try and help in any he could in the process of trying to find treatments," she told the Irish Independent.
