Murder inquiry as man found stabbed
Sunday July 13 2008
Gardai are expected to launch a full-scale murder inquiry after the body of a man was found with stab wounds in Cork yesterday.
Gardai are treating as suspicious the discovery of the body of the married father-of-five, a retired accountant, at a house near University College Cork.
He was named locally as John Hyland.
The 70-year-old man's body was discovered by his wife, Maeve, at 1pm yesterday, at St Francis Avenue in College Road, Glasheen, near UCC.
It is understood the man's body was found upstairs in his house and that he had suffered multiple stab wounds. The scene was sealed off and preserved for examination. Gardai also began house to house inquiries in the area.
Local Fianna Fail councillor Mary Shields said the death was a tragedy for Mr Hyland's family and friends.
"This horrifies and shocks me and I would offer my sympathy to the family," she said
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact gardai on (021) 494 7120.
