Motorists urged to slow down after black weekend on roads

MOTORISTS are being urged to slow down and remain alert after the weekend death toll on the roads rose to seven.

A 16-year-old boy who was cycling with a friend on the saddle died in hospital last night after a collision with a car at 10.50pm on Saturday night.

The victim was named locally as Adam Moran, of Paul Street in inner city Dublin. He had suffered head injuries in the collision which happened on Parnell Square in the city.

He was rushed to the Mater Hospital but was later transferred to Beaumont where he died last night.

It brings to 239 the number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year after a black weekend for accidents.

A 33-year-old man died on Sunday night after the car he was driving collided with another vehicle at Laraghbyran, Maynooth, Co Kildare. The driver of the other car was rushed to Connolly Hospital in Blanchardstown after the incident which happened at around 10pm.

The victim has not yet been named, although it is understood he is not local. His family were being notified yesterday.

Meanwhile, a young Limerick man who was killed in a single vehicle road accident on Sunday night has been named as Robert McElligott, from Ballyhahill, Co Limerick. He died when his car crashed on the N69 route at Caheragh, near the west Limerick village of Glin at 9.20pm.

Three other passengers in the car sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Gardai are also investigating a single car crash which claimed the life of a 19-year-old man near Dunmanway in Co Cork at 1am on Sunday.

The teenager died at the scene at Manch West on the R586 Dunmanway to Bandon road after his Ford Mondeo went out of control and struck a ditch.

Meanwhile, gardai have named the man killed in a collision in Ballynacargy, Co Westmeath on Saturday as Kevin Rocke (36). Mr Rocke, who was from Ballynacargy, was killed after his jeep crashed into a post at the front of a house on the R363 at Slanmore, Ballynacargy shortly after midday on Saturday.

Another crash in Co Cork at the weekend claimed the life of a motorcyclist named as Cornelius Jones (36) from Dr Croke Place, in Milford, Co Cork.

Mr Jones died after his motorbike collided with a four-wheel drive vehicle at Castlecor, Mallow, just after 8am on Saturday.

A 24-year-old female passenger of a car was killed in Portlaoise on Saturday morning. She died after the car in which she was travelling hit a building at Rossleighan, just outside of the town. The young woman was named locally as Clare Hennessey from Ballyroan.

Also on Saturday, an 80-year-old Kerry pensioner died from injures he had sustained in a crash on Wednesday afternoon. He was rushed to hospital after his car collided with an ESB truck at Garranearagh, Caherciveen, Co Kerry.
