Katy French’s condition is said to be extremely grave this evening with the news that she has suffered a new series of heart attacks.
Doctors are growing increasingly concerned for the model as attempts at taking her off a life support machine and medically- induced coma have failed on at least three occasions. She remains in a critical condition in Our Lady's Hospital Navan.
A source close to the family spoke to the Evening Herald this afternoon as Katy’s dad John, mum Janet and sister Jill maintained a vigil alongside 24-year-old Katy.
“She has taken a few heart attacks every time she has been taken out of a coma,” said the concerned family friend.
Today, gardai confirmed that they were investigating what happened to her.
“Gardai can confirm that they are making preliminary enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the hospitalisation of a young woman in Co Meath last Sunday,” a spokesman said.
The spokesperson added that the main focus will be to liaise with the family. He stressed they would be making “no further comment at this time on what is a private and tragic event for them”.
Meanwhile, the source at the hospital added that she would like to see people around the country pray for the model who took ill early on Sunday morning at a house in Meath.
Fears were also raised this morning that she has suffered brain damage.
One society friend had heard that the Assets model suffered heart attacks and has brain damage and added: “But I don't know what happened her. There are so many rumours.” Visitors to the hospital so far have included Celebrities Go Wild co-stars Victoria Mary Clarke and Fair City star Alan O'Neill.
Former Miss World Rosanna Davison said she had heard attempts to bring Katy out of the induced coma had failed.
“I heard they have done it twice already and it has failed. I can't stop thinking about her. Only a few months ago, we were doing a fashion show together and she was telling me all about her ideas and plans,” Ms Davison said.
Fellow Assets model Ruth O'Neill also sent her best wishes to Katy's family.
“I don't know the ins and outs of it. It is very tragic and I hope she gets well soon. I don't know what is going on and no one knows really. It's really sad.
Hopefully she will get well before Christmas,” she said.
Weatherman Daithi O Se, who was also on Celebrities Go Wild, said he was speaking to Katy last week but was unable to go to her birthday party as he could not swap shifts.
“I hope she will get through this,” he said.
One of Katy’s best friends, Andrea Roche, posted an appeal on her Bebo page, saying: “Please, can everyone pray for Katy and her family – please God, she will pull through.”
- KATY’S modelling agency has been inundated with messages of support and concern.
“The level of support from fellow models, people who have accounts with us and the general public has been overwhelming,” said a spokeswoman for Assets.
“Our own models are very upset by what has happened to Katy, and they have been ringing, sometimes as early as 5am, to leave messages and try and get updates,” the spokeswoman added.
“We have also been getting calls from clients who have worked with Katy in the past and are devastated.”
