Military complaints fall by half
THE number of complaints lodged with the Ombudsman for the Defence Forces has almost halved in two years.
Paulyn Marrinan Quinn yesterday published her annual report, which showed there were 116 cases handled by her in 2010, down from a peak of 229 in 2008. She said 57 cases were still under consideration at the end of December.
The complaints included 27 allegations of bullying lodged by one officer with the Ombudsman in 2009 but which were determined by her in 2010.
It is understood the complainant is Air Corps officer Comdt Nile Donohoe, who was dismissed a year ago after a court martial heard he had called his superior officer, "a little pr**k". He has appealed his sentence and conviction.
A breakdown of the complaints showed that 37 referred to non-selection for promotion, 28 for inappropriate behaviour/bullying and 11 to non-selection for a career course.
