Meteors to light up night skies

Ireland is set for a spectacular shooting star shower with more than 60 meteors an hour forecast to be whizzing over the night skies.

This shower known as 'The Perseids' will peak tomorrow night with hundreds of shooting stars streaking over Ireland. Astronomy Ireland chairman David Moore said there could be at least one star a minute. The meteoroids will continue for the rest of this week and into next week.

Choral festival is cancelled

ONE of the country's main festivals has been cancelled for the first time in its 23-year history.

Sligo International Choral festival has suddenly abandoned plans for its three-day 40-choir festival in November. Organisers said that although sponsorship was tighter than in previous years, the main reason the festival was abandoned was because of illness to its chairman Joe Kelly who is in hospital.

THE Monday Million plus game in the National Lottery has been won for the first time.

The lucky player made history after buying a €3 quickpick ticket on Monday in Salmons Store, Main Street, Ballinasloe, Co Galway.

McAreavey suspect accuses police

Avinash Treebhoowoon, 30, confessed to police about his involvement in strangling Michaela McAreavey, but now insists he was forced to sign the statement.Treebhoowoon and co-accused Sandip Moneea, 42, deny murdering the 27-year-old teacher on her honeymoon at the Legends Hotel.
