Man wounded in gang gun attack on his home
A MAN was undergoing surgery last night for a bullet wound after his home was sprayed with gunfire, writes Barry Duggan.
The gunshot victim, Joe Hehir, is the second member of the same family to be shot in Limerick city in just over a week.
Gardai believe that members of the notorious McCarthy-Dundon gang are responsible for the latest shooting incident.
Mr Hehir, who is in his early 20s, was shot inside his home in Raheen Square, Ballinacurra-Weston, on the southside of the city at around 4am yesterday.
At least one gunman opened fire on the house through a downstairs window. The victim, who was hit by one or more bullets, was in the sitting room at the time. Gardai are attempting to establish if Mr Hehir was the intended target.
Mr Hehir was in surgery in the Mid-Western Regional Hospital last night where his condition is described as stable.
Medical staff initially feared that the bullet could have caused spinal injuries.
Gardai believe that up to 10 bullets from an automatic handgun were fired at the house.
