Wednesday November 11 2009

A MIDDLE-aged man has died following a freak football accident.

Michael Collins (51) died from injuries sustained when he fell during a football match and struck his head off a wall.

Mr Collins -- a lifelong sports fan -- was an electrical contractor who lived in Carraig na bhFear, outside Cork city, with his wife and two children. He was playing football last week with some friends at Whitechurch Community Hall in Cork when the accident occurred.

He is understood to have fallen and collided with a wall, sustaining serious head injuries.

Paramedics rushed him to Cork University Hospital (CUH) but he died 48 hours after being admitted.

Tributes have been paid to Mr Collins, who was hailed as an ardent community worker and a great neighbour.
