Magic of Music casts its spell on child stars

By Michael McHale

Monday June 21 2010

THE stars of the future were given the chance to shine last night as they put together a performance in one of the country's most iconic venues.

The Magic of Music, a programme designed to help schoolchildren learn about song and dance, held its first large-scale show in Dublin's National Concert Hall.

The programme, now running for six years, aims to assist teachers in the teaching of music by providing weekly classes to 100 schools.

"We've put on smaller local concerts in the past, but this is the first time we've decided to go for a venue like the Concert Hall," The Magic of Music director Catherine Dunphy said.

"Around 90pc of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and probably wouldn't be able to afford to go to music classes. This gives them their moment in the spotlight."

The big stars of last night's performance were the St Anne's primary school choir, who appeared in last year's 'Late Late Toy Show', with pupils from St John of God special school in Islandbridge, Dublin 8, finishing up the event.

And they'll have the chance to do it all again tonight, this time in the company of jazz performer Don Baker, who will join the children in renditions of songs such as 'Summertime' and 'We Will Rock You'.

Tickets for tonight's show, which starts at 8pm, are priced at €15 for adults and €10 for children, and are available at www.nch.ie.
