Voter understanding of Lisbon Treaty on the increase
Research undertaken by the Referendum Commission indicates a substantial increase in the level of understanding of the Lisbon Treaty among Irish voters.
According to a statement released today, 60pc of voters say they now have at least some understanding of it.
This compares to the 44pc who said they had at least some understanding of the Treaty days before polling day in June 2008.
Just 21pc of those surveyed in April 2008 had at least some understanding of it in, roughly the same time period before polling day last year as this latest research was taken.
"There has been a marked increase in the level of understanding of the Lisbon Treaty over the past year", said Referendum Commission chairman Mr Justice Frank Clarke.
"This is due to the fact that it has been high on the agenda of the Irish electorate, the media and public representatives. While this is heartening, we are working to ensure that every voter understands the Lisbon Treaty before polling day."
This latest opinion poll was conducted for the Referendum Commission between July 17th and 19th.
The poll shows that 38pc say they understand the Lisbon Treaty to some extent; 18pc say they understand it quite well and four pc say they understand it very well.
Of the remaining 39pc, 20pc do not understand it particularly well and finally 19pc do not understand it at all.
