Lay-offs down on last year but figures still grim

By Anne-Marie Walsh

Thursday September 02 2010

LATEST figures show more than 4,000 people were made redundant last month.

This was a 20pc drop on the number of job losses for the same period last year -- but 2009 saw a record loss of jobs.

There have been 43,449 redundancies to date this year, compared with 54,439 by the same time last year.

But the actual number of jobs lost up to last month is likely to be much higher as the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Innovation figures only reflect redundancies among workers who have been more than two years in their jobs. Women accounted for 37pc of the jobs lost.

A total of 43pc of job losses were in construction and manufacturing, while 44pc were in the services sector.

The jobs blackspots were Dublin, where 18,207 jobs were lost, followed by 4,791 redundancies in Cork, 2,954 in Limerick and 2,073 in Kildare.
