Law firm to probe fake advice flyers
A TOP law firm has launched an investigation into a bogus memo that claims to have come from the company advising the public on paying the household charge.
Dublin-based McCann Fitzgerald has informed people who received the memo via email and leaflet drops that it has nothing to do with the firm. The fake advice relates to the Government's €100 household tax, which was rolled out at the start of the year.
€23m plan to ease water shortage
A REGION plagued by water shortages has been given a major boost to its supply with the opening of the first phase of a €23m scheme to upgrade infrastructure.
The Belview Strategic Water Supply Scheme in south Kilkenny -- and just four miles from Waterford City -- will service industrial lands around the two counties and allow for an additional 10,000 houses to be built between now and 2031.
Hundreds delayed after rail gas leak
HUNDREDS of commuters faced delays last night after a suspected gas leak forced the temporary closure of a major railway station.
Kent Station in Cork was closed for over an hour after staff were alerted to a strong smell of gas on the main platform. The source of the gas could not be found but emergency services gave the all-clear for resumption of trains from shortly after 6pm.
Tributes paid to retiring judges
TWO senior judges retired yesterday. In the Supreme Court, Ms Justice Fidelma Macken retired on her 70th birthday after what Chief Justice Susan Denham, described as a "stellar" and "trail-blazing" career.
In the High Court, Mr Justice John Quirke retired after tributes were paid to him in a packed court by the Attorney General, Bar Council, Law Society and, on behalf of the Courts Service, his long-serving registrar Grainne O'Loghlen.
Another FF TD hints at Dail run
A SECOND veteran Fianna Fail politician who failed to make the current Dail has signalled he may contest the next general election.
Outspoken former Cork TD Noel O'Flynn confirmed last night that he may consider a political comeback. It comes just 24 hours after former Ceann Comhairle John O'Donoghue said he would try to win back his Kerry South Dail berth. Mr O'Flynn (59) said members of the public have now urged him to reconsider his retirement.
